Title: The Wonderful World of Grammar
Post by: Trip on Jul 20, 2004, 04:49 AM
To start things off, I would like to welcome all newcomers to Gunbound Guild League HQ's with open arms. Following simple rules will secure you a warm stay for the remainder of your posting days inside these doors.

However.

I would like to stress that those who continue to use the forums have a moderate concern for how they go about posting messages everyone will sooner or later, end up reading. It discourages readers and Moderators to look at a piece of writing, only to find the absence of a single legitimate form of an English word within the strange encryptions these beings post. In other words; I'd like you to show me you have some basic skills in what we call 'grammar' ;

grammar (n.) ; 1 The whole system and structure of a language or of languages in general, usually taken as consisting of syntax. 2.Knowledge and use of the rules or principles of grammar : bad grammar

Part 1 : Words

Anyone who already thinks this post is a bunch of hulla-baloo, may have yet to learn something. Many a time have I come across the simple error of undecipherable musings of a poor forum member that can't seem to type out what he wants to say. But fear not my wounded puppies, there is hope for you yet. Example:

Quotewad shud i get?

Should translate to: 'What should I get?'

Shortening your words does not make life easier for any reader or typist. Posts that don't shorten words spontaneously or consecutively will be looked at with a further degree of care or concern. If you want to prove a point or comment on a situation that needs to hear how you feel about it , make sure people can read it.

1337 speak is a bit touchy. A spoonful here and there is fine, but if it's entire posts, it's bordering overdose.

Part 2 : The Shift key

Ever wonder why some posts have words capitalized, AND THEY ARE NOT ALL CAPSLOCKED? It's your friend near the key 'Z', and another near the key '? /'s fault. The Shift key. Posts that lack the presence of bigger letters after sentence breaks or personal references can be looked down upon, or taken less seriously. I know it's hard to get yourself to take that extra step when you type, but think of it this way; you have a better chance of someone replying to your posts if they don't immediately ignore it.

Confused as of when to use the Shift key? For starters, when you are referring to yourself, the letter 'I' must be capitalized. You should also try to capitalize proper nouns; person, place, (and sometimes) thing. You should also capitalize the first letter of the word after a sentence break.

Example;

Quotei went to the park the other day. squirrels and ducks live there. i went with my friend billy

Should look like this: 'I went to the park the other day. Squirrels and ducks live there. I went with my friend Billy.'

Part Three : Sentence Breaks

Organisms need to breathe, which is true for all living things. The way we stop and take a  breath when we type are with things called 'sentence breaks'. These can be anything from emoticons ,'.'s, '?'s, and '!'s. Otherwise, your post becomes a run on sentence. Many find this irritable to read, and will take your post less seriously.

If you can follow these things without being told, you are on my good list and can stop reading this Nazi-fied post. For those who have problems; please practice or ask a teacher at school for help or a parent/guardian/sibling at home. I'm sure they would be delighted to help you. Embarrassed? Go into your favorite word editor and run a spell/grammar check on what you want to post. You'll benefit a lot more from the decency to post messages people can read and reply back to in the same manor. I guarantee it.

Anyone who has questions about this, may contact me through PM privately. Let's keep these forums readable.

Love,
-Trip

I would like to add that this is not to discourage anyone from posting, it's here to encourage you all to try to use some brain power to either, A: not be lazy with your posts, and B: if you truly do not have a firm grasp of grammer and sentence structure, it indeed would be your benifit to learn how to do so.   By completing a few minutes of learning to do this will make your posts more valuable to each reader, and thereby more enjoyable to read.  In return, there is a good chance you will receive prompt answers to any post or questions you may have, whereas if your post is pretty much a pain to filter through and nearly impossible to read in it's entirety, more than likely it will be ignored.

I do want to stress that we, as human beings, should not flame, poke fun, nor demean anyone in anyway, because for all we know, anyone that does not post in what most of us see as the "correct posting format" may not truly have a firm grasp of the concepts. However, this truly is an "English" community, and if you join an english community, it should be within yourself to post properly.

Sorry if I intruded on your post, Trip, I just wanted to add a few minor points.

1) Do your best to post properly, it works to your benifit as well as everyone elses.
2) Take the time to learn a little if you do not have a frim graps of grammer and sentence structure.
3) Keep in mind, this forum is meant for English speakers, not shorthand 1337 speaking run on sentence users.

Thank you.
