Title: Future of Gunbound (GIS)
Post by: dovoxove on Dec 13, 2004, 02:43 AM
its been 2 years since i started working as a GM for Softnyx.
2 years can be a short period of time or very long.. just depends on how you look at it.

Even i didn't expect Gunbound to grow this much.. It is not a game that i created, but i've furnished it and loved it. And It sure has grown a lot. I've spent countless hours pursuing hacks and those who DOS attacked the servers. Also met great friends that I treasure until this moment.

Now I am thinking of leaving the scene for awhile... I have not decided what to do yet. But if i do decide to leave Gunbound ( Softnyx ) i won't be returning back.

It is entirely true that future of GB lies on the players.
I would like to hear your thoughts on your exprience playing Gunbound.
*i'm not asking you tell me what to improve on, but just your overall impression about Gunbound. Simple answer would do ^^ but if you'd like to get into the details, please do*

PS: During my exam week, i have gotten a lot of PMs.. Sorry i have yet to get back to those who PMed me ^^ I'll get back to you ASAP

it's an awesome game. addictive, yet so relaxing. it's better than rpgs cause you can play for 10 minutes then do something else, or just lean back and play a match. the ranking system is awesome, too bad botters are ruining it. I love the idea with avatars, it's smiply a great game.
you meet a lot of nice people through sites like gbgl, if it wasn't for this community I would still think people were idiots and I'd get bored quicker.

I have played for three months now, I wish I started earlier. or do I? after all I was using dialup back then.. *shiver*

I hope that you will go back to playing, if you decide to leave the management, dovo. thanks a lot for the effort you've spent on gbgl :)

It's cool in the beginning, but eventually once you get high ranked enough with alot of gp, it becomes a drag to keep your rank up (if you play for rank.)
It's alright if you play once in a while.

Strictly playing the game?  I love it dearly.  Even with a big budget game like World of Warcraft on my desktop I still play GunBound frequently.

It has the charm of a cute puzzle game, but with the superior depth of a strategy game and with enough team play to resemble a sports title.  uberbacon made a good point, it's much easier to pick up a quick game or three than a lot of the current online games.  GunBound definately has a style of it's own, and even if it's a little antiquated and at times barely intelligible.  To be honest with you, that's what caught my attention at first.  It being good was an unexpected bonus.

However customer service is AWFUL.  AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL.  It's bad.
Adventures in Customer Care (http://www.gbgl-hq.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=2987&view=findpost&p=43807)

This issue was never resolved.  I sent at least 6 e-mails regarding this problem up until the event closed.  At best I would get an automatic responce.  Half the time I got nothing.  Of course there are other continuing problems with the service including turning a blind eye to bad sportsmanship such as botting, hacking, and event wrecking that just kills morale and further invites this sort of behavior.  The in-game messages tell us to make GunBound a clean society.  The community coordinators (if any) are largely responsible for this too.

Hackers and neer-do-wells should not be welcomed.  You should not fear dismissing them because you will lose active players.  Games that practice this like UO and DAoC are doing poorly because of this mindset.

Well, if gunbound goes P2P, then I'd better not be more than 20 singapore dollars a month. If it is, then Its not worth my pocket money.

My wish is that GIS gets its priorities right. Dont get me wrong, im not saying they suck or anything, just that like everything else on Earth, GIS can improve in these areas:

-Customer service
-Resource allocation (i.e. We all know that Zones 11 and 12 are simply overloaded while the rest are almost always underutilised. It's high time we changed that).

Agreed.

I've had some awesome times playing GB, messing around with friends, idling and chatting, and whatever.  But the community has gotten noticeably crappier since I've started.  I'm glad I started when it still wasn't too bad.

It's a pretty good game, although I suspect entirely by accident. It can be played both casually and competitively, although there are significant disincentives to the latter, which is several pluses in my book. There are a lot of "although"s here. The game is flawed in a lot of aspects but manages to be worth playing despite this.

My main problem with the game anymore is that I cannot tolerate random games, because they are almost invariably three out of four of these:

#1: Meta Mine, Death40.
#2: Dual/Dual+ only.
#3: Stacked to hell.
#4: Aduka only.

I suppose it's not Softnyx's fault that the player base is made up of morons, for the most part. But it is their fault for not doing something to provide disincentives to prevent massive amounts of stupidity. Argue it if you want, but in any game people go the path of least possible effort to maximum results, leading to many of those stupidities we have right now.

#1: The Meta Mine thing can't be helped, I figure it's like Cave, only selectable. Maybe you should get more GP if you select random instead of a specific map? I have no solutions here.
#2: Another thing that can't really be helped without modifying the rewards system, or putting a finite limit on how many things you can disable. Are people really playing the game Softnyx made if they disable almost everything which makes the game interesting? (I keep meaning to convince someone to make a power user game that's score with nothing but team teles enabled, on nodeath.)
#3: Regardless of what Creedo thinks, it is a problem because there are absolutely no disincentives to prevent people from doing this. Wands v hammers is commonplace because the hammers don't know any better and there is no real way to both play with friends and randoms that has even teams in any way whatsoever, because there are no incentives to make people stay for such. The best suggestion I can come up with is "tiering" the zones into separated by rank, increased GP incentives for the higher rank zones.
#4: Ice tag v3.0, ho! Technically it gets around the abuse rules because it's not specifically for gold/GP gain, but you may as well face it: That's what they are for.

Add to this that avatar on is fundamentally broken right now thanks to problems both with splash damage mobiles and screwed up avatar configurations, and right now you've got a game I can only tolerate a tiny subset of. Plus, there are still balance issues with some mobiles (Whyyyy does Trico shoot differently based on the way it's facing, whyyy does Sate do such ridiculous damage, why can't we have the old, non-noob Cake back?) that need sorting out.

If nothing else, it would be prudent to reconfigure the way the servers are setup. Obviously you can drop an avatar on zone or two, the way it stands right now. I suspect that Softnyx would be reluctant to do so since that means people would be less likely to actually pay cash for avatars.

Dovo... i know that you dont know me very well, but i've been playing gunbound for over a year now... having fun with it... always enjoying every single game that i've played, no matter what person i have to deal with.  I was invited by tooya in the beginning and then i got my own girlfriend to play along with us too.  I've invested so much of my money on gunbound... its not even funny.

You have always been mentioned in gunbound conversations... regarding how nice you were, or how helpful you were... and things like that, and seeing that you, as a great part of our gunbound community, is leaving... places everything in a different atmosphere.

Now... when something wrong happens with GB... who are we to go to?  No one.

But i've enjoyed the game... never many complaints with me... nothing that i want to improve... nothing that i want to add... nothing.  I've loved the game... its a great way to relieve stress and a great way to have fun.

Dovo, Thanks for being there man... i know you dont know me... but thanks.

I like it a little. Its a game i can play for about an hour a day. But no more really, gets boring after long periods of time. Iv been hacked a few times on gb also(damn trojan key loggers). But i know you guys are working hard to stop it, even though no one ever helped me either time >_>

But over all a pretty good game. If i were you i would keep on working for them, but its up to you.

First, to people who didn't really read dovo's post:

"*i'm not asking you tell me what to improve on, but just your overall impression about Gunbound."

Thanks anyway psikobox and mauvecow, please consider saying something positive next time, unless you're trying to make Dovo quit :/

To dovo:

I learned about the game from a friend where I worked, and nobody else had heard of it, and even my friends on IRC hadn't heard of it. I couldn't believe when I first played it how good it was, and for free. Now almost everyone I know on the internet has heard of it and a few people at work too, I have only been playing ... maybe 6 months?

I used to love an old DOS game called "tankwars" that had the same idea, but was so simple. When I saw gunbound, and that there was both chat channels and a buddy system, and hundreds of rooms, and also the avatar shop with costumes, that could change your stats... it was overwhelming. Then I saw all the different mobiles and items to choose, I was amazed.

Later when all of that stuff stopped being new, I still enjoyed the game just because it's very addictive and you have a lot of encouragement to learn more and improve... you want to keep playing so you can learn how to hit perfectly with full power shots, at first it looks impossible and you're so easily impressed by it... later you see people who can hit with various formulas or just have awesome feeling and experience and almost never miss, and you want to learn how to be like that too, and of course you always look forward to the next rank, especially to become a wand.

So you play a lot and learn the aiming tricks and eventually make wand, and even after being a wand is old for you, there is always some special stuff to learn for each mobile, like boomer backshots, shotgunning raon shot 2, trico 3in1, ruining angle tricks with lightning and nak, bunging in one turn with bigfoot or JD, making good turtle SS shots...

Lastly when you think you know everything (which is impossible), just playing and chatting with friends is good and relaxing fun, I like to say gunbound = irc + shooting. ^^

So my overall impression for you: it's an excellent game, with very good cute graphics, lots and lots to do and learn, and a great price. I have always been grateful that it's free, and I have always hated that some people forget that and complain too much about the things gunbound GMs work hard to improve.

I hope you stay with softnyx. The game has grown so popular with the international community, and it feels great that we can talk to a gunbound GM directly, instead of talking to an automatic form. I hope you don't feel burnt out by people's complaints, or the difficulties of dealing with hackers etc. Stay with softnyx, I think they must be very talented and even if gunbound isn't perfect, maybe someday they will produce something perfect and you'll want to be a part of it.

Hey dovo, you were only GM for one year (or you kept the secret for a very very long time) :P

All I can say is... I've been playing for more than a year, and I've invested a consistant amount of energy and money into the game. I have mixed feelings about it. I think it's an awesome game, but it's handled poorly, and there's nothing I can do about it. They've got heaps of resources, but they don't use them, it's disgusting.

I won't blame you for leaving the GIS team, but GMs leaving is not good, you need to bring in more GMs, more coders, more people, or else gunbound will die. The average player does not stick around. They want to make money, but they're not doing SHIT to get that money.

I think the game is pretty good except the bugs and hacks amount is just way in the sky for a game. If they could just fix these 2 known problems then I think it should be worth while to play it.

GunBound is the best..I been playing this game a little bit over a year, and i still play (most of the time i just play a game for a month n says its boring)  But GunBound is different, i made some friends, and i would spend money (if i had a credit card) What im saying is that GunBound would (i hope) a bright and happy future!

And also, i am not leaving the scene yet. I am still having second thoughts about leaving.. too much time spent , too less pay.

QuoteAnd also, i am not leaving the scene yet. I am still having second thoughts about leaving.. too much time spent , too less pay.
Someone should write a status report to softnyx...

I could do it if you want.

It would basically be a document that's several pages long that outlines the flaws of the game, how they can be fixed, improvements that are expected by players, and a recommended course of action.

We see the work of the graphics artists and GMs being done properly... The GMs are overworked, and the artists provide good work... But the coders seem to have abandoned the project. This is absolutely not how it should work, and a LOT of people would be ready to be GMs for free.

I don't know how many employees are at softnyx, but one thing is sure, they are not enough. It reflects on the game's quality, and I'm tired of all my friends leaving the game.

I don't know how determined you are about making gunbound better, but I would love an opportunity to write a document for softnyx to help them achieve better service (and this better service will reflect on the money they make by making the userbase GROW instead of stagnating like it is doing now)

I'm not trying to make anyone quit. I'm stating my impressions of the game and what really needs to be fixed. I quit the game for 5-6 months out of frustration at it, as you recall. Lately, since I've been trying to get back into it, all that I've been reminded of is why I quit in the first place; Those are the primary impressions I have had of late and that is why I said the things that I did.

Example: I tried taking my newbie double metal axe account through the free zones and it took me half an hour to find a game that wasn't 1v1, on meta mine, aduka only, or stacked to hell. This is not fun. At all.

And that's not a good thing. If it's hard for me to find a game that's both fun and fair, imagine how hard it is for everyone else.

Really, fundamentally it's a good game, the GMs are trying their hardest and the artists are finally doing a good job. But between the bugs and all of the other inherent problems with the game as it stands right now, it's hard to tolerate and I'll probably end up running for the hills again soon, leaving you all to not have to put up with my opinionated bastardness. It is my honest opinion that it needs a lot of work.

actually, They dont seem to be THAT overcrowded. a few months ago you were blessed by god to make it into server 12 in a couple hours of clicking View All, But yeah we need another avatar off zone. That double metal axe or higher zone has no more than 20 1v1 rooms at a time. how about a double metal axe or higher avatar off zone? so botters cant bot off of nub accounts and The stacking guilds cant stack against total noobs.

In my opinion, Gunbound is a very open game with alot of people talking, playing, collecting gold and everything. Gunbound was an explosion in the world of Online games seeing as it was so different and expansive. You can shoot people from 5,000 miles away 2 inches away on a computer screen. No worrying about 3D graphics, missions, idiots... ... well theres those. At least it isnt like idiots in MMORPGs and RTS war games. Gunbound is so addictive because theres so many things you can do. You can never stop collecting GP, avatars, Making new friends, breaking relationships, talking, everything. Gunbound has no end except either People stop liking it, or it becomes outdated and passes away, which wont happen soon. Though my 1year+ of gunbound Ive witnessed a project by a small korean company which included about 5,000 active players on 2 little servers, with little known and little to work with turn into a massive online experience with tens of thousands, even more of users logging on daily... Gunbound caught on to people. People around the world were telling each other about a cute little addictive game thats free and fun. Like will Wrights sim Games, theres no end, you can keep developing. Thats true in gunbound. Even though theres a few problems and glitches, a bunch of cheaters and bad people, softnyx has maintained this game as a fun experience. To do THAT in THIS game, takes alot of work, and i congratulate softnyx. Good luck with life dovo, and never forget that little cute game with 2 animals shooting each other with ice chunks and boomerangs. It will never die in our minds.

I think, GB should have only about three avatar on servers, besides the two beginner avatar ons. The avatar on ones are rarely past the halfway mark, and the off are swarming with people, hell, all today I was having trouble getting into 12 or 11, and not once did I get on and not have to press "View All" for about three minutes minimum, and then when I did get on, all of the rooms that you'd enter, the teams would be fucking stacked! I haven't been playing GB for too long (about three months...) so I really haven't played to see the servers packed, but... the avatar on servers are packed with stat whores that would kill someone with a mediocore avatar like mine, easily.

The chatting thing, I think, should work more so like Aol Instant Messanger, like if you get messaged the window blinks, so you know that you've gotten messaged.

GB needs better customer service, there's no doubt on that.

^Basically what people already said...

Besides those few flaws, I'd say GB is awesome. Really addictive... I start to go crazy after not playing it for a day.

I've made so many friends through GB, even though a lot of people are rude (but that can't be helped... Lol...) you can still find some nice, down to earth, funny, people.

And with the fun of gaining GP, buying the "newest" avatars, and winning of events, GB is really a great game, especially for it being a free game download.

I've played other internet games, and none of them even caught my attention, I made an account, and then gave up.

:^_^: Okay... my short term attention span cant take anymore of this long posting business.

This game is really addictive, expecially for starters. However, as time goes, it's easy to get bored of it. Then again, after probally a few months of break, it's back as addictive as earlier.

Also, I'd like to comment on the players of GB. There is seriously alot of total idiots, irritating players, assholes in this game, and they ruin a portion of game (It dosen't really matters whetter they're hackers or not). But overall, there's still, nice, mature, kind and helpful players, also a great place to find new friends all over the world.

I hope GB won't turn out to be a fully P2P game. The cash system is going on, pretty well. Eventhough I am not a cash-buyer (I wish to :(: ), I'd say that it was a great improvement towards GB. We can't expect Softnyx to keep this game totally free, right? Then again, I hope that Softnyx would be able to keep the stats between the cash and gold only items more balanced. It's not like I don't want to buy cash, but I'm unable to, still trying to get my online bank account to work.

Finally, I'd also like to point out that Softnyx could work harder to fight against hackers. IMO, it wouldn't be that hard. But then again, what do I know? :-_-:

Erm, 1 more thing, MORE MOBILES!

Basically, I love it. It's a game I would never stop playing but.......

Don't take it as a complaint, but somethings really discourage ppl playing. This well knows bugs with ice and raon have been out there for months now!!!!
The only explanation I can find for that is GMs, Softnyx or whoever is in charge doesn't care about it. You, know, I don't care if problems appear and later be fixed, but this is like gunbound is totally abandoned. MONTHS ppl MONTHS, it's a global matter, clearly affecting everyone.

Despites this, I find no other reason to leave the game.

However, seems to us your work is great Dovo, i have no doubt you work a lot. Still, if ppl who work with you are not competent enough, you could even try to cover their asses, but you should know the time to stop too. I'm not saying ppl are incompetent, I'm just saying that IF they are, you should consider whether its worth to overload yourself with work or not.

Still, I hope you stay cause then our hope of a better gunbound won't die so easy ;)

Hey Dovo, I basically agree with all of the last posts.  To me, Gunbound was good while it lasted.  The first year or two was great, a handful of players, you knew just about everyone there.  It started slowly rolling downhill with the uprise of hackers, botters, and whatnot.  I enjoyed the game greatly until that day when the staff announced that certain characters in the name were illegal.  For me, that counted as an underscore.  I understand how hectic it must be for the staff to keep up with each and every member having a problem, but I felt kind of ripped off.  I got banned for the "illegal" character in my name, and later that blue wand account was deleted without my consent.  I'd appreciate if you improved on your customer service.
By the way, I'm that Crono guy who always PM'd you in game.

ok after playing gunbound for over a year i still think its a great game. the worst thing in it is the pure stupidity of the common comunity in gunbound. that aside the one thing that i would like to see the most ( even though there probably isnt a chance if this happaning) is somethinhg like a offline version of it, or just a version were your computer the server for a single room that is only avilable with the ip adress. other then that its a great game that i hope to play for many more years.

p.s. a new lay out would be nice   :jumpy:

I definitely wouldn't quit, Dovo, GIS would be doing a lot worse than they are without you on their staff. The only main problem I have with GB is the amount of fucking botters. It's god damned ridiculous. The fact that cash-charging (I don't think most non-cash-chargers are, either...) botters aren't perm-banned is also quite stupid.

Mauvecow is intellectual for us all.

GunBound is a very addictive game.. if you take the game as a whole, as one basic item (meaning there are no botters, lamers, etc.) then the game is excellent. The fact that there are stupid people on GB detriments the game, and that's what most of us would agree on; that asshats in GB make the game a lot worse than it really is.

About the Trico I thing, I think it's just the way things work. Pretend you are on a two dimensional plane, and you are holding a pencil. Face left, and throw the pencil as if you are throwing a knife. Observe the direction of the spin. Now face right and throw the pencil in the same fasion again. Observe the direction of the spin. I'm sure you all know this already, but this really justifies for Trico being "wierd." It's a challenging mobile to use in this way.

Mauvecow always makes a big deal out of this, but you need to think more openly.

Every mobile has a few serious drawbacks

Lightning: Cant hit people underground, Can't melee, Small angle.
Bigfoot: Can't climb well, Screwed 8/10 times long range, small true angle.
Ice: Shots fire from different spots on the mobile, often making shot 2 impossible to use from a pit, has low movement and crappy climb
Nak: Low movement, dependent on terrain
Armor: Serious delay issues and a small true angle, not to mention a weak SS
Aduka: Low HP/Defense, Crappy attack damage, dependent on thor.
Grub: Low damage, dependent on terrain
Sate: Awkward firing angle, making it difficult to shoot out of a hole, Hard to use long range
Raon: The obvious mine glitch paired with a low damage shot 1 and pretty low movement.
Cake: Low firing angle and low defense/health and an entirely useless SS
Boomer: Very low hp/defense, very dependent on wind.
Mage: Pretty standard mobile, nothing spectacular damage wise. Shot 2 has a tendency to do oddly low amounts of damage if you cant use it.
Turtle: Very low movement, hard to use SS, and odd delay.
Trico: Fires differently when facing left/right, difficult to learn and can be difficult to impossible to hit perfectly in some situations

So you see, when you think about it, things are kinda balanced (ignoring Sate's high damage)

The mobiles that most need fixing are Sate (Damage), Raon (mines), Ice (SS), Cake (SS and firing angle) and Bigfoot (needs better climbing)

Yeah I know, but there is so much to be fixed it comes up in every topic like this. You cant say what you think of the game without stating the bad things and the bad things are what need to be fixed. Get it?

Anyway, Gunbound is a great game as a whole but when you factor in the community and constant glitching it greatly diminishes what could be an excellent game.

About that status report idea, I have a job, a very time consuming job, so I can't do the status report, heck, I can't even play gunbound, so meh...

I'd ask someone else to do it, but after seeing what people wrote in this thread, I'm thinking, what the hell. Am I the only person who's capable of being objective about the game?

QuoteMy main problem with the game anymore is that I cannot tolerate random games, because they are almost invariably three out of four of these:

#1: Meta Mine, Death40.
#2: Dual/Dual+ only.
#3: Stacked to hell.
#4: Aduka only.

I suppose it's not Softnyx's fault that the player base is made up of morons, for the most part. But it is their fault for not doing something to provide disincentives to prevent massive amounts of stupidity. Argue it if you want, but in any game people go the path of least possible effort to maximum results, leading to many of those stupidities we have right now.

In the past year you've done nothing but complain about the same subject. The way OTHER people play the game. I see the word "stupid" every other sentence. You are RIDICULOUS. I don't play in metamine, I don't play dual only, I don't stack, and I don't play aduka only, yet I'm able to enjoy the game. Figure it out.

You can think what you want. I do not make such comments for no fucking reason. (http://cowspot.ath.cx/images/gb-games.png) If you looked outside the little cliques we've created, it is true that people play like that. And it is hurting because it's causing stagnation. If you don't, more power to you. But to consider it not an ongoing flaw is hilarious.

Maybe I'll do a writeup in a fashion that sounds a little less inflammatory and a little more explanatory, considering I tend to write my rants at like 3 in the morning. Like the fact that it's basically impossible to get a newbie account anywhere in the metal axe->silver/gold axe range, between being kicked and having the only game that is generally not against you in some fashion being aduka games. But you wouldn't know this, would you? This will lead to the stagnation of Gunbound. The separation of people into jackasses and those who can find cliques worth anything. I consider myself fairly lucky to have found some intelligent people early on. This is really hard for a lot of people now without resorting to external means.

I do not comment the way I do for no reason.

(And on the Trico thing, I know well why it does. I'm just asking why it hasn't been fixed. Along with A.Sate's left-to-right thing.)

one question: why make a new game, that may fail (lets not forget magicpunk) when you already ahve a huge fan base for the origanal gunbound. rather than try to create a enw game, why not just fix this one up? if it takes clsoing down gunbound for a while, then so be it, but fix the origanal before risking a failure with countless hours put into it.

Suggestions - (This may seem kind of extreme but...) -
If a gunbound mode (like score, tag, solo, jewel) could be created called "real time" which allowed players to play gunbound in real time, not turn based but everyone to be able to move and shoot at the same time , haha that would rock

I love this game.  I have been playing Gunbound for over a year now, and I have met over a hundred new people that I enjoy playing with (even on other games) and talking with on forums (such as this one).  Yes, there are some bugs, but I can easily overlook that because Gunbound is a wonderful game as a whole.  It's extremely addictive and, even after playing it for so long, I am constantly finding new things to try out.

Sometimes I view Gunbound as a competitive game; sometimes I think of it as a highly interactive chat room (i.e. play games while talking to your friends).  After having played GB for so long, I find the game more fun and relaxing as the latter.

I don't want to get all mushy and whatever (like Merq did 8D), but please stay... you've been a great help to the Gunbound community.

P.S. I am all for a full-out war between Softnyx and Wizet.  We'll crush those commie bastards and their substandard games... :>

And... erase all the ranks?  Re-code ALL OF GUNBOUND?  No, just no.

Reset the ranks aye? Aight, all wands back to chicks, new chicks are still chicks and they're battling with wands now. There's already alot of "fake noobs" in the newb zone, now we're just gonna let EVERYONE access it?

Besides, what would that do? Botters could just bot again :-_-:

Every rank abive 6900 GP that hadnt logged on for 2 weeks had their ranks reset to 6900. My gold battleaxe(back then) was reset to 6900 because i had been on vacation for a week, Prior to that, not really playing for a week, i decided to log on and my rank was baleeted. I wanna see every chick below 800 GP and/or hadnt logged on in over 2 weeks after signing up to be completely erased. COMPLETELY. DOVO! GET THIS DONE!

Deleting inactive accounts? For what? Say someone played legit real hard up to a high rank and they decided to have a break or probally something happended in their real life causing them not to be able play TEMPORALLY. When they come back, they realised that their accounts are long gone, what would they think?
They did something like that last may

I thought the starting GP of a chick is 1000? They need to do alot of TKs to get to 800  Or am I wrong?

MANY online games delete accounts after about...90 days of inactivity.

Seriously, what the fuck are we going to do with all the people that play maybe once and never play again? Their accounts are just taking up wasted space on Softnyx's servers.

Besides, the guy who took "Kitsune" is still a fucking chick after a year, so it's obvious they're not playing.

90 days is a pretty good amount of time for inactivity, some REALLY bad would have to happen to them to be out for 90 days if they didn't just stop caring about the game.

Yeah, I know how you feel.  I started this game over a year ago and Slash was already taken!  To this day the character is still a chick... what a waste of a name.  Plus I thought that if you're over 6900 they wait until a month of inactivity before taking away GP.  Meh, that's just what I thought, but I don't know for sure.  But I really think something could be done about this.

PS Dovo you've done a great job so far, plzzzzzzzzzzzzyzzz don't leave!!!

Same problem I've faced. banzai (and a few nicer variations of the name) is a chickie chick that hogs my chosen name...

BTW, I think resetting all ranks could risk losing a large customer base (possibly cash users) as too many rich dumb little kids are too obsessed with ranking up.

I know I'd stop charging cash in the least. I'm not "obsessed with ranking up", seeing as I'll NEVER get anything above red wand, but if I'm gonna play for a year, and then have my 95k GP reset? Oh-ho-hooooooo, I think NOT.

I think that deleting inactive accounts might be a good idea...there are a lot of them out there. (Althought the inactive cut off date would hopefully be like 1 year prior to the date they do it--I, for one, don't play much at all from June to September.)

Resetting Accounts? Not a good idea--I've worked hard to be where I am and that's nothing in comparision to wands.

Better idea?: They actually use the seasonal ranking system they have, which could go for maybe a month or three. That way, people could keep their ranks but still have a shot at being a "seasonal wand". I dunno...

aye, I agree deleting inactive accounts if a very good idea. A person has taken the account name SolBadguy, and the account is a chick and has been a chick for almost a year and a half. 1000gp till this day.

Resetting accounts would drive me insne. With the current gp gain, and the amount of botters, it took me over a year to reach ruby wand, to lose that. All the hard work I put in it, playing 8 hours a day just so I can rank up. Words can't describe how I would feel there.

As for the seasonal ranking, I think I recall it used to work. Back a little less then a year ago it worked, and I'm talking about the in game ranking button that you see in rooms and stuff. But it was turned off later. If I recal the ranking button worked during the Worldcup days.

Resetting ranks isn't a solution for anything but making it easier to stack teams until the ranks settle down, then we're back to the same old problems we've been at for a long time.

I don't think anything short of an overhaul of something will change anything fundamentally for the better here. I've looked at most of the options, so maybe I'm just missing something.

In reality, to fix gunbound, all ranks must be reset.  However, this will serve no purpose unless problems such as inactive accounts and massive botting are also fixed.  There's no real easy way to fix botting though, so that will never happen.  Tis better not to worry about ranks, or do it on some unofficial site (ie. bacons).

Ok for the sake of kiwi's statement

I SHALL STATE MY EXPERIENCE.

I have been playing for about a good year and one month. The concept was awesome and was something I knew that was going to be extremely fun. Which it still is! I remember when I first got into Gunbound, I always thought the music was great and that getting the clone suit was the ultimate goal, eventually that got me stopped short as I got scammed once. Yes I have been scammed before.

LESSON ONE: Never trust anyone ever.

Internet Ignorance: Eliminated.

Soon after, I learned that despite the abundance of idiots in the game, THERE ARE MANY COOL PEOPLE. Such as all the great members of GBGL.  I remember my very first game as an Antistatter and that I think I complained about being DT'd. I think 404Error or someone else told me to shut up. Surprisingly I did and have never complained about it ever since.  I then joined GBHQ and AntiStat forums. After seeing the abundance of retards yet again in the forums, I decided to reform myself to never be one of them. I used to talk like I was "gangsta" and "ghetto" and spelled "lyk a fukin retrd" until I decide to just plain stop. While it was a gradual change, it EVEN AFFECTED MY SPEECH IN REAL LIFE. I don't sound like so many fucking dumbass wannabe's trying to sound cool which is defnitely a plus.

Internet Stupidity: Elminiated
Speech: PLUS!

Well and it goes like that for a long time. While it may have taken much of my time throughout my past year of this life, it was spent on developing social relationships with friends I have met through gunbound and moderating a fansite for the great people of it. Im glad to be part of this service and to be working for that french bastard (<3) for all of you people.

Overall.

Gunbound has changed my life and that is indefinite

i'll start replying the pms now. Got like 20 of them ^^;

Also i got promoted. yay. Unfortunately, my good friend and collegue Maharaza is leaving the company.

This season's prizes are destributed. Except for Rixtastic , since he has changed his Game ID, i don't know of he's where abouts.

*Well i read the comments and suggestions. Things that people happen to repeat are going to noted. As for the rank problem.. i don't know how this will be resolved. Rank reset is a bad idea though.

its a beta testing theory but how bout this, 1 server (all i ask) rank images aren't shown, stats aren't shown at all, avatar stuff doesn't count (stars dont count), and if you want you can go to as far as preventing disabling stuff, etc. plus if you want to test stuff just make a new server for ppl to test, we know there are some ppl wanting new features, and beta testing would help to remove bugs before actually implementing it, hence more stable srv, with ppl being able to see new stuff before they actually release

Dovo:
I'm looking forward to gunbound XP also, but I agree with lordmerq/flipped for once... don't put lots of time and effort into a new game when you have so much good work already completed with gunbound... just fix gunbound and we'll all be happier. Even if it takes downtime, that's ok. If you do make a new game, I hope you keep the same characters and weapons... new background and items are ok :D
Glad you're staying.

Mauve: Kiwi's blunt, but I kinda wanna say the same thing. Your screenshot seems like great proof that 'all' games are bullshit, except you only took screenies of power users. Power users are twice as likely to be the kind of people to run a MSG (let's use an abbr. for it, Metamine Solo Game).  If someone's serious enough to spend real money primarily to control the room, then they probably are trying for a specific game type, of course.

I looked through all the blue colored rooms and noticed that the map is almost always set to random, and you find more random maps than metamine map games overall, and more non-solo games than solo. For every room you can produce that is MSG, I can find 2 that are not (and also not Aduka only). Advice mode activate!@ --- I think your first step to happiness with gunbound is to stop avoiding a specific popular game type, be willing to play and enjoy all the game types (in the end they're all the same thing, shoot when your turn comes up).

Also be more discriminating about your buddies. Avoid non-friend teammates, and maybe consider avoiding non-wand teammates, or at least stick to good silver & gold baxes. Your gunbound experience can be ruined by teaming with random people and low rankers. That's not promoting stacking, just promoting sanity. Play AGAINST whoever you want, but be careful who you play WITH. Nevermind the enemy's rank or motivations. As you're so fond of pointing out, who you play AGAINST is outside your control.

Look at the benefits of this perspective:
If you don't look at the enemy's skill level or rank, play well, and only buddy and play with others who can play well:
-- You can't complain about stacking because you're not worried about their motivation for playing.
-- You can't complain about bashing noobs to rack up easy GP because you don't give a crap about their motivation for playing.
-- You can't worry about being slaughtered in an unfair game because you came to gunfight carrying a chicken or a hammer, to mix metaphors badly.
-- You can't complain about being bored and frustrated because you're playing with friends and you're all shooting well, and I've never seen anyone play with friends, shoot well, and say "this sucks, I'm bored. I think I'm gonna go." I don't care if it's the most boring metamine solo 4 armors-and-4-boomers game in the world. It's fun if you don't set yourself up for a loss or play with strangers who go "jajaja" and could care less about a missed dual.

To wrap it up, by looking at things from this perspective you're transported to a magical happy place of no complaints, no excuses, and no worries.

oh, other stuff:

nuke inactive accounts: fantastic idea. Don't be fooled though, this doesn't make it easier to hit top 1-3 percent. Statistically if the same number of people are actively growing GP, then you're still fighting those same people to hit ruby or diamond or dragon, and the top 3% might have fewer people in it, but it won't require fewer GP. You still need to play more games or win more games than the rank 1000 guy if you want to be the rank 999 guy. I just want to see old accts freed up so their taken nicknames are available.

reset ranks: bad idea, accomplishes nothing. The white dragon = the number one guy in gunbound = the guy who has the best bot setup, we all know that.  So what happens if one day, everyone's got 0 GP? After 24 hours, the guy with the most GP is white dragon again. Who will that be? The guy who bots the fastest. So is botting eliminated? Well duh, no, there's still a good reason to bot and always will be.

Possible fixes for botting:

-only games vs someone who is within 3 ranks of your own (above or below) count for GP.  So the number one player gains nothing unless he plays vs someone who is at least ruby wand. A ruby gains nothing if he plays anything below gold battleaxe plus. You get the picture. This does't mean you can't play vs the other ranks, you just don't earn GP. If you play vs a dragon and 3 chickens, you gain GP for beating the dragon only.

-Chess-type rankings, where the amount of GP earned is based on the rank of the person you play against. So beating up chickens earns GP very very slowly, while beating up wands earns GP much faster. You can't just get 2 wands in a room and have them trade kills to earn rank because all they're doing is raising bar for the requirement to hit the next rank.  To really make progress to the next rank, you must play someone who is higher, not just equal, and if one player is higher than the other and they trade kills, then eventually they will both be equal and have to stop to find better players.

-Simple game detection routines that run all the time, or maybe randomly. Anyone who plays vs a chick with negative GP is banned for botting. Anyone who plays over and over again vs an enemy who suicides every turn, regardless of that enemy's rank, is determined to be a botter and banned. You get the idea. They just run some background script that detects certain patterns that indicate likely botting.

Post by: creedo on Dec 23, 2004, 01:59 AM
Forever to find a game definitely sucks, power user helps a lot, but really there's no reason to complain about too many high ranks on one side. Why would I want to play with someone who is much worse than me? Why would my teammates want to? I'd rather wait a while for a game where everyone on at least 1 side plays well.... than quickly get into a game where everyone but me plays like shit and I get frustrated and want to quit playing.

Anyhow, once you're good enough, nobody can really stack against you. I don't mean you must be able to beat 30 ppl in 1v1 and never miss, just good enough to have some no-miss games. When you're that good, you will never feel cheated because a very strong player beat you.

Some people will say "yeah but people playing against me might feel cheated"... well christ, I feel sorry for people who think about things like  that...  they must worry about the feelings of a moth they just swatted, and whether or not it bothers their dog when they snore, or whether they should buy gifts for their 2nd grade teacher on christmas, and should they get their own food at a restaurant to give the waitress a break..

The fix against botting was thought up back in GBHQ, and it was quite simple: Kick out anyone who suicides 3 times in a row in the same room. Additionally, keep track of the people in the room when the suicider was kicked out ; block out the suicider if they try to join a room with someone from that list. List should be emptied once a day. Maybe implement something similar if anyone is the victim of a DK 3 times in a row in the same room.

That idea was suggested as a fix for SUICIDE JEWELS!

I'd like to see a botter who registers a new account every 3 games :)

Anyways hmm... I should write that softnyx document I wanted to write... I'll show it to you guys once I'm done.

The problem with this is that when you're at a high rank, and play with other high-ranked friends, people at half-decent rank won't even fucking stay to begin with. Very rarely does anyone above battleaxe join, ready, and play the entire game. No matter what kind of 'solution' you can come up with, it will ALWAYS depend on Gunbound's userbase. Which sucks. indeed. 90% of my damn competition is a bunch of nubs. No one above the b.axe rank wants to join stacked games. no one. everyone is to damn busy thinking of a way to play to win. The only time I have games where its high ranked opponents are all friend games.

Post by: LordMerqury on Dec 23, 2004, 09:21 PM
This is kinda how i progressed through GB

August-September 2003. The birth of GIS , and my life in gunbound:::

I basically started this game after i heard about the korean version on an online radio, and a guy talking about how they might make an english version, So i signed up for the korean service and after about 2 days GIS came out. I hopped on the gravy train and i got rolling. In the first weeks i tried to look for people to play with, because very few people knew the game, so I hooked up with a north-carolinan kid named Cazesudo and a pennsylvania kid named PARANOiA. I found them in a game as battleaxes, even though they were rank 20 and 22, and They kinda tought me the basics of the game. They also showed me GBHQ, a forum dedicated to Gunbound, both versions. I then sparingly played the game because i lost some interest in how bland it seemed to me, playing with the same people and never really trying new things

October 2003 -January/Feb 2004. My growth., My downfall

I came back sometime in the middle of october with the name that of both the heavy metallic liquid and the name of Queens lead singer, Merqury. I found antistat playing against Toolmob one day, along with my friend AznVampire who was in toolmob. I was introduced to Toolbert and the mob and i had found a guild to call my own. I had ranked up to gold battleaxe by the middle of November and i made my prescence in the avatar off server. Being on the top 300 and still being a gold battleaxe felt good for me :), but those days were numbered. I heard rumours of a program that forces one person to jump off giving the other person GP. I was like "ah shit, Gunbounds getting MMORPGitis, the eventual downfall of a Online beta game", But, staying true to Toolmob and GBHQ, i stayed playing, Kinda sparingly. Then in december I took up 1v1ing. and i Whored 1v1. I made close to 500 GP daily, 1v1ing random noobs and pros in the avatar off zone with my money suit, which had newly been allowed in avatar off. i made a killing in roughly 3 weeks, advancing to Blue wand. I was accused for hacking late january-february 2004 and Merqury was no more. Feeling my pity, a blue wand named Z0idberg, who i had shared his account with when he was on vacation occasionally, gave me his account for a while, which he took back, then ditched it.

March - September 2004. The rising of the Lord

After tooling around with a couple online games, i retook up gunbound. I named my new character LordMerQury, Which was named for being higher than my previous. I played until around late april, when i quit the game for a short while. I was at 16800 GP, I came back 2 days after i heard that they were clearing out unused accounts, and i found my LordMerQury sitting at 6900. I played only a few games a day to get my fill opf stress relief, until i rested around 14k GP Sometime in august.

October 2004 - Now. Let my voice be heard... Or not...

I decided to start gaining more GP by 1v1ing yet again in the avatar off zone. I had been with GSquad and Pockethouse for a while and i really got active with them. Late in november i found a game labeled GBGL TOURNAMENT and i was like ooooo. SO i checked the site and now here i sit, at my computer, typing this obscessantly long post about my history. Meh

Heres a few big things i remeber from GB past

2 Servers to start out with, The constantly full "avatar on" and the always slightly empty "Avatar dead as a doornail", which is where i found my life as an avatar off player.

Jewelcide. 8 Players in dummy slope. 1 team suicides, getting no penalty and letting the other players each get 400+ gold and 12 GP. It was banned late in october.

The first event, The mobile collecting event in december, You had to collect puzzle pieces in random event games and if you completed the 15 piece puzzle you got a bear event suit, which i still have

ice tag. 2 players in miramo town go close to each other and trade off Shot 2's and Bandaids, always staying around the same health, and each getting 3000 gold, ending with around 1200-1600 gold and 10GP for the winner and 800-1100 gold and 8 GP for the loser. It was stopped when the 1000,2000,and 3000 damage bonuses were all set to 1000 gold, but staying the same GP.

The rise of hackers editing the gameplay and Botters cheating their way to the top around the new year.

The punishment of abusers!.. wait, how come theres only like 60 names on the list? :P

The bombshell that was the Cash system in december. For a while everyone was torn between "They just need the money" and "They just want noobs buying good avatars with their parents credit cards"

The sudden explosion of new avatars, like muaythai, samurai, matrix, orange blade, disco suit, and others around december-january

The release of the Dragon and diamond wand ranks in february, just in time for the huge growth of botters

Punishment of Abusers... wait.. Nope

1,000,000 accounts registered on GB, which was hit in march of 2003, now theres almost 7 million, 6 million+ of which either at 1000 GP or below

The clown event, which required you to buy tickets with 1000 GB cash, which was considered somewhat of a scam on Softnyx's part

The resetting of inactive accounts in mid may of 2004

The coming of new avatars are the Power card in early summer, which prompted a new generation of Wand/pro stacking 4v4 games

The greatly disbalanced halloween event of 2004. Most of you already know about that :)

Punishment of hackers... Finally.. Wait, softnyx is just saying words again

The wish point crisis of december 22nd to the 24th of 2004,

Thank you for reading this... or not. Meh i had 20 minutes to kill on a thursday night

now that i think of it, just stop the ranking @ ruby wand, remove all diamond dragon ranks and put them @ ruby, or re-addjust the configuration to how it was originally, this should stop majority of botters because once they reach ruby, no realy point of botting, only to be in top 300 (big deal)

I think ppl will always bot just because ppl are always aware of "The number one guy in gunbound" even if he doesn't have a special wand or dragon icon. They should fix botting properly, by detecting bots and the people who use them and enforcing bans.

Oh someone was saying that stacking's out of hand, I dunno wtf to say but today, I had a ton of fun... me, a ruby, a pink wand with a 90% win rate (COFF ... I dunno. He shoots well anyway... ) and another blue wand. So that's a pretty stacked team. We got ppl staying and readying REALLY FAST. I mean like no more than 30 seconds between most games. I will admit we won a lot vs some noobs, but those noobs just kept readying and were glad to be there. So I guess my question is, if I get fast games, and I'm glad to be there, and the other team is glad to be there... what exactly is the problem?

Anyway I see a lot of stunting from my teammates and I, I don't think it's 'playing to win' just because you choose to team with good players. We lost at least 2 games due to stunting that lower rank players wouldn't have even tried :P

your one damn lucky guy  :o:  even with 1 gbaxe, 1 sapphire wand, 2 double axes no one stays takes atleast 3 mins   but right now i think gis should concentrate on one thing, bugs bugs bugs and more bugs. once most bugs r fix, then work on fixing other problems, dont add more stuff causing more problems until you fix the first

very fun game.  addictive, yes.  Although sometimes I do wish for a FFA game type (10 or so people) or 5 V 5 to allow more friends to play in one room.  Botting seems to be a big problem though.

EDIT: spelling error

by FFA you mean finaly fantasy? oh good lord no. and 5v5 would just mean mroe stacking and longer games. if anything make a 64v64 and fuse EVERY map with 9 available slots. Of course youd have to have multiple slots on the delay list otherwise you have one turn per hour :D

Hey Zoidberg.  Remember me?  It's Crono_0210 from Halogen.  Those sure were the days.  I planned on typing up the Gunbound history, but you already seemed to do it for me. Peace.

FFA = FREE FOR ALL.  1v1v1v1v1v1v1 or something.

FFA = Cheaters. People and their friends will gang up on the unsuspecting randoms for more gold before fighting it out with each other. FFA would be fun if it wasn't for the gunbound community. Unfortunatly those kids are asshats and ruin everything.

Hey dovo you don't know me im new. But gunbound needs some fixing and suggestion. I don't want to to overwelhm you but here they are.

1.avatar shop sales like 15% off all avatars or cash avatar become gold or vice versa.

2.guild buddy list and guild tournaments

3.more events based on skill not luck

nothing more i can think of.  :^_^:

xmas event was good idea but didnt turn up as well as it was suppose to.

Here on Peru is a boom. Despite some attitude issues its a very cool game.
But, I think its time to add new things, I see gb is is becoming very stational; every1 wants to play in mematine with dual only. A ranking system that shows ur skill would be cool too (sorry for the sug but I had to say it)
