Am I the only one who shoots on gut instinct? I mean sure on null wind I know the full power shots, but otherwise I pretty much wing it. I read more and more about fixed powers and memorizing formulas. It makes me feel a little a little pathetic to not do all this extra work.
Am I the only one?
I do, and I have become pretty good on instincts with Asate and a few other bots. I don't care to learn formulas and guides to go by, I would rather play by feel.
Throughout my entire Gunbound-ing 'career', i have NEVER used the guides ( as in those power, angle formulas). I always shoot using instinct. If it hits, good. If not then, just try again.
I was a play by feel person...but with formulas you would be how unsure the formulas are...they ARENT a sure hit all the time you have to include altitude some special problems angle weight, the wind differences can completly fuck you...its at the pooint where you arent sure to trust the raw #'s or to include your additional thaughts to it....The formulas have gotten me into GB again...its a new twist to the game for me
I'm a boomer instinct Uber-wah-be-so-pro-...not shooter.
Formulas = crap.
I fire. if i hit, i continue. if not, raise or lower power till i do.
Someone's asking for a backshot. i close my eyes, pray, and hit the Divine Bar.
It's either WHAMMO or oopsie.

Well, I use trico and I would feel pathetic if I never got the 3 in one o.0 for trico you kinda NEED to memorize angles and powers then adjust, no real way to feel your way thru
feeling alone? you need a group hug
(http://www.jeffwillet.com/group_hug.jpg)
on a more serious note, don't worry, i gave up on formulas a long time ago, nearly everything is gut instinct, unless i may know the angles for high angling for some bots at 0 wind.
Im pretty sure alot of people shoot on instinct including myself.
I use both.I think its only about preferences.I use the 2.4 when I play turtle when I can but thats about all.Actually at times that formula hates me lol. When I play boomer at long range if I cant hook it I will stick to 70 and I will hot most of the time by feel.So I use feel for everything and 2.4 at times with the turtle.
I dont use any formulas/guides unless i am UHA in 0 wind... then it is just stupid not to.
i can do just fine shooting by feel.
I never use any guides. I just feel if it will hit or not.
You cant shoot with formulas alone.
Formulas just give you a check point to estimate your shots off of, there is not really a differance that can be determined between "feel" and "formula" players, some just dont use the check points as much as others.
Yeah....formulas gve you an estimation...and lately Ive learned to adjust acording to feel...realy its a whole new play style, you realy should try it before you judge it

Ive gotten the 3 in 1's using my own works and feels. The only thing i ever used to help myself is that a higher angle is a slower spin whilst a lower is a faster. From there i just practiced until i found which angles worked well for me
You feel more accomplished when that happens rather then reading a guide which are usually too long for me to want to read
Formulas...feel...what's the diff?! As long as your shots give you that "w00t!!!" feeling, it almost never matters how you did it.
For the record, I mix it up. It's good to know both formula and feel. Making a shot with either method gives me an equal sense of achievement. Missing a shot with either method makes me want to paint a big "L" on my forehead. Same diff, whatever method.
Knowing when and when not to apply formulas is a big advantage as well. Most of the formulas need a little bit of feel in them anyway. For example, boomer's 2-bar fixed power method is not exactly 2 bars. In fact, it almost never is. And so is the 3-bar. That said, when I resort to just 'feeling' it, I stick to a couple of angles I'm most familiar with. In this case, you could say I use a "fixed angle - feel power" method.
The one big disadvantage of formula shooting is the delay. Accurate feel shooters can win the delay of accurate formula shooters any given day.
Unless I'm using Trico, I pretty much just go with what I feel will work. Perhaps subconsciously, I've figured out the formulas, but it feels like instinct to me.
this is true.
The fomulas are valuable in that they can give you a point of reference.
a comfort zone if you will.
There is no distintion between feel and formula, it take alot of work to accurately calculate a shot, while not impossible, it does require alot of math and usually a TI-83+. That takes too long, and delay would screw you.
Using memorized points as reminders then using so called "feel" or estimation to make the fine adjustment, is much more effiecent and usually just as accurate, if not more.
knowing just one point in a formula is the same as taking 1 test shot before a dual, so in a game if you can mentally take that test shot, you have an extra turn.
it adds up, especially in full gear games, where matches are long and damage is low.
A poll was recently posted about this, and I think twice as many people said they use feel, not formula.
Feel is the choice you will automatically use when you are first starting the game, so it's pretty much only natural.
Cbchui says fixed angle is better than fixed power shooting, which basically means feel is more important (most people who use a non-boomer mobile with a fixed angle don't use formulas to get the amount of power they need, they feel it).
So do not feel like you're weird, formula users are in the minority.
With all that being said, cbchui developed and uses a formula even though he says it's not the best way to play, and I decided to learn formulas after playing some very good armor players who used the cbchui formula to trash my friend and I.
I guess what I want to say is that even though feel is great, and even necessary, there's no reason to AVOID formula shooting. Especially don't listen to anyone who says formula shooting is crap. It's like saying vanilla ice cream is crap because you prefer chocolate... just different preferences. I think you should wait to try formulas when you reach a point where you either
a: can't seem to improve your skill level and win rate using feel only
b: are bored of gunbound and want to try something to bring freshness into it (like dissolute has).
Good luck.

Exactly.
using a Formula is like having the swirl ice cream.
Choclate and vanilla swirls.
which is better than both by themselves.
Bob taught me guides are evil. I stopped reading them and shot how i felt was right and it made me a lot better.
Maybe half the guides out there are junk :o
Most people write them because they like to write and want to get other people's approval, not because they are actually good enough to write a useful guide. A few really want to help people but STILL aren't all that good. Then there's the sad case of those who are good, but suck at english or writing in general so half of what they're saying is totally missed :/
Never used a guide, never will, and I think I'm a fairly good player.
Start using just 2 angles of the 2.4 system.
1 screen = 60
half = 75
there are quite a few more. but these are what got me started, and I undoubtably use them the most.
trust me on this, I had as much as a 5% increase in win %.
Since I started my 2.4 fixed power, I have actuly dropped in win rate....
I dont realy use 2.4 for winning I use it because it is just more fun then the 3k+ games Ive played on Dissolute alone using feel....things get old 2.4 is new and fresh, try it and you will LOVE it
Never played with formula's, because i`m the feel king =)
The only thing close to formulas I've ever used is when my friend qwazi gave me the power increments (?) at which Trico's shot 2 aligns. Everything else I learned from experience, especially ultra high angles. I think it's much better to learn by yourself, rather than from a guide.
We got 2 different things we're talking about here, using formulas and using guides. There are a bajillion guides out there that don't have any formulas, and you can learn a formula without touching a guide and see how you do with it.
Guides aren't needed really if you just sit down and play a lot, I'd say 95% of the stuff I put into my guides I knew by the time I was pink wand. So basically 2500+ games and you'll know what you need without a guide.
Formulas on the other hand ... they made a big boost in my win rate.
I played a bunch of different bots but didn't settle on any, then I heard about and learned the 2.4 formula and tried armor and turtle.
My stats ended up being something like:
Any non-armor, non-turtle mobile: 64-65%
Armor: 75%
Turtle: 72%
And when I started applying the cbchui method to other bots, I found they also improved, I went from a shitty A.sate to a 77% one just because I could aim far shots a little more precisely than your average sate. To this day my sate is still probably my winningest bot, and I put NO time into learning it at all, but I know how to aim with 2.5 bars and of course how to play delay.
I dunno what to say about dissolute's win rate dropping except that he may be at a point where he's bored of gunbound, isn't worried about earning GP, and therefore plays anywhere, including sure-lose games. Also early on it's rough playing with formula because you don't have the wind adjustment factors memorized completely yet, and goofy wind directions can cause you to miscalculate. But he's having fun and I think that's cool. It IS fun.
I run purly on instinct for normal shots. Backshots I use a 2.5 bar formula, and I memorized the uhas for boomer. Hookshots you need to memorize. Its just ezy by instinct.
I only shoot on instinct. Using guides, calculating angles and power wouldnt be much fun at all.
Forumlas are good to help you get used to how the mobile fires. If you use them too much though you will become dependant on them
I don't use any formulas at all. Mostly that's because I'm way too lazy to attempt it. I just shoot by feel.
I don't really care about my Win% or my precision in hitting shots... I don't know, I don't suck at this game but I sure don't rule. And I guess that's just how I am.
I've never played in a long enough stint to actually develope any formulas. For me its usually 1-2 weeks playing....then a month off because of some flaming 'tards.
