What I have written below are the facts I gathered from the media. As I mostly watched Polish media, I had to translate the statements myself, so please excuse any small differences and inaccuracies that I might have introduced.

Facts:[/li][li]John Paul II was very ill in his last days; He was unable to speak during his Urbi et Orbi blessing on 27th of March (Sunday).[/li][li]Thursday, 30th March, around 21:30 -- The light in Pope's apartment lights up on this late hour. Press gathers around Vatican Palace.[/li][li]On Friday, April 1st, in the morning Vatican communicates that the Pope's health condition has worsened dramatically and he had developed high temperature because of urinary tracts infection and have suffered a mild hear attack at night.[/li][li]At 6:00 am the Holy Mass is celebrated (usually conducted around 11:00 am) during which the Pope was given the last Holy Communion (viaticum).[/li][li]On the same day Vatican informs Pope had refused going to Gemelli Hospital and decided to stay at home. Around the noon media informed that the Pope is in a coma, but Vatican demented the news and stated the Pope is conscious, however extremely weak.[/li][li]Throughout the whole day the state of Pope's health was constantly deteriorating. Around 20:30-21:00 Vatican stated that "the Pope's low blood pressure gets even lower, the heart disorders are observed and the kidneys start ceasing to function and the respiratory help is required".[/li][li]Just after 21:00 when the eyes of the whole world were set on Vatican's Palace, Italian media announced the news: "Pope John Paul II is dead, his ECG is flat.", which was transmitted all over the world in an instant.[/li][li]Five minutes later Vatican demented the news and stated that the Pope, despite his critical condition, is alive and (again) conscious. There were no other official statements until next day.[/li][li]On Saturday, April 2nd, around mid-day, Vatican announced that Pope is "conscious, calm and in good mood; he reacts to the people around him, however his state is still very serious". He told the youth gathered under his windows (the sentence was reconstructed from what he kept trying to voice) "I was looking for you and now you have found me for which I thank you very much".[/li][li]On the same day Pope felt good enough to sign and seal the resignations of 6 bishops and appoint 12 archbishops.[/li][li]On the same day, at 22:04 the Vatican announced that The Hole Father had died at 21:37 in the evening.[/li][li]For the sake of the visitors' health and safety, the Pope's coffin is going to be closed during the following days, when it will be presented to the visitors in the Sistine Chapel.

Possibilities:[/li][li]The new Pope could be too busy at the beginning of his reigns to deal with sacking those 6 bishops and letting in another 12 archbishops.[/li][li]The old Pope could be too weak in his last moments to even be able to sign the papers and stamp them with his seal (good thing he did that after all).[/li][li]The death of Pope on April's Fools could be a bit awkward. God's no joker, we know it all.

Anyway, i dont think we really would want to speculate on such things. Besides, the media frenzy would have generated some rumors here and there. Papers just print them without verifying it. =/
